Discover The Falafel Shack

Walking into The Falafel Shack at 9 N Main St, Chambersburg, PA 17201, United States feels less like entering a quick-serve diner and more like stepping into a neighborhood kitchen where people actually care about what’s going on your plate. The first time I stopped in, it was during a busy lunch rush, and instead of being rushed through an order, I was asked how spicy I liked my food and whether I’d ever tried authentic Middle Eastern falafel before. That kind of interaction sticks with you.

The menu is compact but thoughtful, which usually signals confidence. Falafel here isn’t an afterthought; it’s the centerpiece. The chickpea patties are made fresh, fried to a crisp exterior, and still soft inside. According to research from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, meals centered on legumes like chickpeas are linked to better heart health and sustained energy, which explains why I didn’t feel sluggish after lunch. Pairing falafel with fresh vegetables, tahini, and house-made sauces turns a simple dish into something balanced and satisfying.

One item that gets mentioned often in reviews is the pita wrap loaded with falafel, pickled vegetables, and a drizzle of garlic sauce. I overheard a regular telling a first-time customer it was best comfort food without the guilt, and honestly, that’s accurate. The ingredients taste fresh, not processed, and that lines up with USDA data showing that freshly prepared meals tend to have lower sodium levels compared to fast food alternatives.

What impressed me most was consistency. I’ve been back several times since that first visit, including once after a long drive back from Harrisburg, and the food tasted exactly the same. That kind of reliability doesn’t happen by accident. Restaurants that standardize preparation methods, like soaking chickpeas overnight and grinding them in-house instead of using mixes, usually deliver better texture and flavor. The owner mentioned learning these methods from family recipes, which adds a layer of authenticity you can taste.

The dining space itself is simple and casual, more diner than destination restaurant, but that works in its favor. It’s clean, welcoming, and designed for people who want good food without pretense. Local reviews often highlight how friendly the staff is, and I’ve seen them greet repeat customers by name. According to a 2023 National Restaurant Association report, customer loyalty is strongly influenced by personal service, even more than décor, which explains why this spot has built such a steady following in Chambersburg.

There’s also something to be said for accessibility. Being right on Main Street makes it easy to stop in whether you’re on a lunch break, running errands, or exploring downtown. I’ve noticed a mix of students, families, and professionals grabbing meals, which tells you the place appeals across age groups. While the focus is clearly Middle Eastern comfort food, the flavors are approachable, even for people who’ve never tried falafel before. One customer next to me admitted they were skeptical but left saying they’d found new favorite lunch spot.

Of course, no restaurant is perfect. Seating can feel tight during peak hours, and parking downtown sometimes requires a short walk. Still, those are small trade-offs for food that’s clearly prepared with care. Information about sourcing and exact nutritional breakdowns isn’t fully detailed on-site, so diners with very specific dietary needs may need to ask questions, though staff members have always been transparent when I’ve asked.

Overall, the experience here reflects what many food experts advocate: simple ingredients, prepared well, served with genuine hospitality. Whether you’re scanning menus online or relying on word-of-mouth reviews, this place stands out not because it tries to be trendy, but because it consistently delivers food that tastes good and makes you feel good eating it.

  • I met them at Farmers on the Square in Carlisle and again at the Market of Curiosities event also in Carlisle. I love everything about them. The food, the aura, the service. The owner is a true gem and as soon as I get a car, I will be regularly visiting their locations. If you haven't already, make it your business to get here. He also has a pizza place in Chambersburg as well!

  • I had an amazing experience at this restaurant! The food was absolutely outstanding — every bite was full of flavor and perfectly prepared. The lamb and the falafel sandwich were especially unforgettable. The service was just as impressive; the staff was attentive, friendly, and clearly committed to making sure every customer had a great dining experience. The food was so good that we couldn’t resist ordering three more meals to take home! It’s rare to find a place that delivers both top-quality food and exceptional customer care, but this restaurant nailed it. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a spot that truly goes above and beyond.

  • The food tasted authentic and delicious! The service was amazing and even the owner came out and made sure everything was okay for us and even gave us a sample of another special they had going on for the night! 10/10 would recommend!

  • Went for lunch and got the sample platter with chicken shawarma, Moroccan tea, falafel sandwich and masala fries. Everything was delicious. Service was great! Limited seating inside and outside. Street parking with meters.

  • Excellent food, service, and atmosphere. I had the beef kafta and my wife had the chicken korma. Both were excellent, I cannot stress this enough. Our server was funny, helpful, and attentive. For dessert we split the cream of wheat cake, also unbelievably delicious! I wish we lived closer because this would become a staple for us. I cannot wait to visit again.

  • An absolutely lovely spot in downtown Chambersburg! The menu has so many delicious options, it was difficult to choose. We tried the butter chicken, Bosnian pizza, lamb chops, chicken shawarma and of course the Falafel and hummus! Everything was cooked perfectly and was absolutely delicious and flavourful. The staff are very caring, attentive and so friendly. The atmosphere and decor is gorgeous. We can't wait to come back again and try more specials!

  • The Falafel Shack in Chambersburg, PA is not to be missed. Offering a variety of Lebanese dishes such as Shawarma and of course Falafel, the food is traditional and absolutely delicious. The flavors are amazing! I had the Chicken Shawarma sandwich with Sambal sauce. If you like it spicy, add the Sambal. The chicken was super tender, juicy, and full of flavor. I loved the pita and the Toum sauce was creamy and went perfectly with the Shawarma seasoning. Portion size was good. Staff were super friendly. Do not hesitate to stop by the Falafel Shack and experience great food and service.

  • We had a great stop here for lunch on a trip up 81. We split a falafel sandwich, Shack Fries, and the daily special Okra Fries, then a falafel and pita for our toddler. The food was amazing and the staff was so kind to us. They brought our son his water out in a little cup with a silicone elephant lid to prevent spills. It was very fun and I had not seen that before! They had an affordable kids menu, and since our toddler doesn't eat much they also had a la carte options like individual falafel and pita for $1 - $3 so we could make our own quick meal for him. My husband also has a gluten allergy and could eat much if the menu without modification, but the menu is also highlighted with what can be made gluten free. We had the falafel sandwich with a gluten free pita, and it was delicious. Cross contamination isn't an issue for us, but if it is for you, they let us know the frying oil is changed out every Monday and Friday. If you get there early those days or call in to say you're coming, they can save one fryer to not fry and gluten containing ingredients for you. The staff were all very accommodating to my husband's allergy which was very appreciated. Highly recommend!
